St Thomas a Becket

PE & Sports Premium Grant

At our school, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and experience the enjoyment, achievement and personal growth that sport and physical activity can bring. Guided by our mission and our Gospel values of Love, Faith and Courage, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils can participate fully in high-quality physical education, competitive sport and active play, regardless of their starting point, ability or background.

The Primary PE and Sport Premium provides funding to improve the quality of PE, sport and physical activity across the school. We use this funding strategically to enhance teaching and learning, increase participation, develop staff expertise and provide a wide range of sporting opportunities that inspire children to be active for life.

All children receive two PE lessons each week, developing their physical literacy, fitness, confidence and teamwork skills. In EYFS and Year 1, children benefit from high-quality Continuous Provision opportunities that support the development of gross motor skills through active and engaging play. Our Forest School programme further enriches physical development through outdoor learning experiences that build resilience, coordination and confidence.

We are committed to inclusion and ensuring that every child can access physical activity. All Key Stage 2 pupils participate in swimming lessons, including children with SEND. Additional support is provided for pupils with the most complex needs to ensure full participation and success.

Children have access to a wide range of extracurricular and enrichment opportunities throughout the year, including lunchtime clubs, football, dodgeball and active wraparound care activities. Our annual Sports Day and participation in the Mini Marathon encourage all pupils to challenge themselves, demonstrate perseverance and celebrate achievement.

We are proud to provide opportunities for children to represent the school in local and borough competitions, including cricket, indoor athletics, Sportshall Championships, basketball, dodgeball and football. Year 5 and Year 6 pupils also participate in local girls' and boys' football leagues, developing sportsmanship, teamwork and competitive experience.

Further opportunities are provided through cricket coaching for Key Stage 2 pupils and our partnership with Charlton Athletic, including participation in programmes such as The Joy of Moving, which promote physical wellbeing, positive mental health and healthy lifestyles.

Through the effective use of our PE and Sport Premium funding, we aim to:

  • Increase participation in physical activity and sport for all pupils.
  • Develop children's physical literacy, confidence and wellbeing.
  • Ensure inclusive access to high-quality PE and sporting opportunities.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes towards physical activity.
  • Provide opportunities for competitive sport and personal achievement.
  • Enhance the skills and confidence of staff in delivering high-quality PE.
  • Encourage lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

Through our values of Love, Faith and Courage, we inspire children to be active, resilient and confident learners. Through a high-quality PE curriculum and a wide range of enrichment opportunities, we promote lifelong participation in physical activity and sport, ensuring that every pupil, regardless of ability or need, can develop their physical literacy, wellbeing, confidence and enjoyment of being active. Our PE and Sport Premium funding plays a key role in providing inclusive opportunities that enable all children to participate, achieve and flourish.

Guided by our values of Love, Faith and Courage, we are committed to helping every child discover the joy of physical activity and sport. Through high-quality teaching, inclusive provision and a rich programme of sporting opportunities, we nurture healthy, confident and resilient children who are equipped with the skills, motivation and enthusiasm to lead active lives both now and in the future.
