Approach to Phonics and Reading
The children in Foundation Stage are taught phonics and early reading skills through the use of Letters and Sounds and Read Write Inc. These programs continue in Key Stage 1 and 2 where the individual needs of each child are met through whole class teaching, small groups and one to one sessions.
Children in Foundation Stage are encouraged to nurture a love of reading and exploring books. In the Nursery parents and children have access to a library of books to take home and share together. In Reception early reading skills are developed through the Power of Reading Project and children are also encouraged to take home books from the class book area to share with an adult at home. In the Spring Term Reception children start to read phonetically decodeable books and those that use high frequency words through a range of schemes such as Read, Write Inc, Dandelion Readers, Phonics Bugs, Oxford Reading Tree and Rigby Star.
In Key Stage 1 reading continues through the use of the schemes mentioned above so that the choice of book can be carefully chosen to suit the pupil’s needs and ability. Throughout Key Stage 2 the children move onto independent reading which is regularly monitored by the class teacher and support staff.
